GAY WEDDINGS TORONTO

Congratulations on your decision to marry. Gay weddings in Toronto first became legal on June 10, 2003. Canada then legalized gay weddings across the country in July 2005, giving it the honour of being only the forth country in the world to do so. The Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain were the only ones to legalize gay weddings prior to Canada. Gay and lesbian couples have been flocking to Toronto in ever increasing numbers to take advantage of Canada’s policy that allows gay weddings between people who are not residents of Canada. Although these non-resident couples’ same-sex marriages may not be legally recognized in their home countries, the spiritual and symbolic significance can’t be denied.

Many couples choose to have their gay weddings in Toronto, not only because of Toronto’s large and vibrant gay and lesbian communities, but that Toronto is one of the most exciting cities in the world. And there is an amazing range of services that cater to same-sex marriages including gay wedding planning services, gay wedding photographers, gay and lesbian friendly venues, and gay focused travel services. Gay weddings can have secular or religious ceremonies. The requirements of a gay wedding in Toronto are quite simple:

  • A marriage license
  • A person legally authorized to perform the ceremony
  • Two witnesses

There are no residency or citizenship requirements nor are blood tests or medial certificates required. In order to obtain a marriage license both parties must fill out the license application after which either person can present themselves at any city or town hall with the appropriate documentation. Toronto does not have a waiting period and the marriage license is valid for use anywhere in Ontario for a period of three months after it is issued.
